Bread Boxes

Bread left in a plastic bag on the counter goes soft, then stale or moldy. A wooden bread box keeps it in the dark with a little airflow, and crusty loaves last noticeably longer.

Both of ours use a corner design: a triangular body that sits flush against two walls and uses the patch of counter that usually collects clutter. Each has two levels, so a loaf can go on one and rolls, bagels or tortillas on the other. The double-layer version is made from food-grade solid pine; the other comes in carbonized black, walnut or white to match your cabinets.

Keep the box away from the stove and the dishwasher vent, and brush out crumbs once a week.
